Historical price Stellar

Stellar’s (price) history

Jed McCaleb founded Stellar in 2014, after having gained years of experience at Ripple Labs, the company behind XRP. With founding Stellar came Lumen(XLM), the digital currency that runs on the Stellar network.

Stellar and Ripple are quite similar. Both coins serve as a bridge between the world of cryptocurrency and the banking sector, and both want to make it easier to process international transactions with their own currencies.

But there certainly is an important difference between Stellar and Ripple. Ripple focuses primarily on banks, whilst Stellar focuses on individuals. Jed McCaleb says he is motivated to help people instead of companies.

Therefore, "remittance" is an important focus of Stellar. Remittance means sending international transactions between different currencies. Suppose you would like to send money to a family member that lives in Australia. It will take a long time before your family member receives the money you’ve sent. With XLM, that transfer is arranged in a matter of seconds.

The XLM price has had quite a turbulent history. Below you can read about the highs and lows of the XLM price:

  • Stellar was founded on July 31, 2014. A few days later, the accompanying coin, XLM, had a value. On August 5th, XLM was worth 0.003 euros.
  • Within five days, the price had doubled to 0.006 euros.
  • But this did not last long. Shortly after, XLM fell to the all-time-low of 0.001 euros.
  • There was a short peak just before Christmas 2014, but after that the value of XLM fluctuated between 0.002 and 0.004 euros for years.
  • That all changed in May 2017. The XLM price began increasing rapidly and for a brief moment, XLM was even worth 5 cents. Although that may not seem like a whole lot, it was an increase of 4,900 percent since the all-time-low.
  • But that is a mere shadow compared to the beginning of 2018. On January 3, 2018, XLM was worth almost 81 cents!
  • The bear market of 2018 also hit XLM. The price dropped back to 7 cents in early 2019.

Will the Stellar price stabilize?

The value of XLM is going up and down at the moment. Those price movements are called price volatility. Does this price volatility ever end? And why does the value rise and fall so fast? That is best explained with the help of an example.

Cryptocurrencies are still a relatively new market. You can also see that with XLM. The total value of all cryptocurrencies together is almost two billion euros at press time. That sounds a lot, but it really isn't. For comparison, the total value of Apple is a sloppy 600 billion euros.

A relatively "small" amount can therefore already have a major impact on the price of XLM. In addition, many day traders are active on the cryptomarket. These are investors who act on a daily basis. They respond to daily movements.

What does the cryptomarket look like compared to the total stock market? You can see that in the image below. The blue blocks represent the total stock market worldwide. The green blocks on the other hand represent the entire cryptomarket. This includes XLM, but also crypto coins such as bitcoin and ether.

Only invest an amount that you can afford to lose

Last but not least, we always recommend investing an amount of money that you can afford to lose. In our opinion, investing in cryptocurrencies is one of the most interesting investments you can de, but at the same time it can be risky due to its volatile behaviour.
