Monero’s (price) history

Compared to many popular coins, Monero has a long history. The basis for the coin was established in 2014. That’s when Bitcointalk forum user thankful_for_today used the Bytecoin code for a new currency. The name of that new coin was BitMonero, a combination of Bit (as in Bitcoin) and Monero (literally "coin" in Esperanto).

Unfortunately, BitMonero was poorly received by the community. A group of fans led by Johnny Mnemonic decided that the community should take over the project, and not even five days later Monero was born.

In 2016, Monero was the fastest growing cryptocurrency. The market capitalization and transaction volume of Monero outdid any other coin. It is speculated that this is due to an important feature of Monero. XMR is a privacy coin, which means that the team behind the coin find anonymity and the right to privacy very important. These valuable properties have made the coin popular on the darknet.

  • On May 2, 2014, the value of XMR started out at 2.21 euros.
  • That turned out to be a bit over-enthusiastic, the coin was only worth 38 cents at the end of the year.
  • The exchange rate remained pretty steady for a year until the end of February 2016. The value tripled from 45 cents to 1.50!
  • In August 2016, things suddenly went very fast. Monero’s value increased rapidly, and one year later it was worth 129 euros.
  • There was a slight decline at the start of 2018, but not much later the bull run started and Monero didn’t stay behind! On January 7 2018, the coin was worth 443 euros!
  • Unfortunately, that was also the last highlight for now. Just like the rest of the cryptomarket, the value of Monero plummeted.

Only invest an amount that you can afford to lose

Last but not least, we always recommend investing an amount of money that you can afford to lose. In our opinion, investing in cryptocurrencies is one of the most interesting investments you can de, but at the same time it can be risky due to its volatile behaviour.
