Largest Domino's Pizza Franchisee in the Netherlands offers employees bitcoin salary

May 22, 2021 - Starting today, the largest Domino's Pizza franchisee in the Netherlands is offering its employees a salary in bitcoin. The payout is handled by Dutch bitcoin company BTC Direct. The timing of announcing this partnership is no coincidence: today is Bitcoin Pizza Day.

It's up to the employees

All employees are free to choose whether they want to receive a salary in bitcoin. This only applies to the part of the salary above minimum wage. Payout of the minimum wage will remain in euros, which is legally obligated in the Netherlands. The payout in bitcoin occurs simultaneously with the "normal" salary, and is stated on the payslip.

More than 1000 paychecks

Immensus Holding is a franchisee of 16 Domino's Pizza locations and also provides payroll services for its own, as well as other Domino's franchisees and restaurant businesses. As of today, more than 1000 internal and external employees can opt-in for a salary in bitcoin.

Co-owner Jonathan Gurevich explains: "We are a modern company, and we work with a lot of young employees. We hear them talking about bitcoin and we want to offer the opportunity to own cryptocurrency. By partnering with BTC Direct, we enable employees to start small and keep adding automatically with each paycheck. This allows us, as an employer, to offer something extra for the future. "

Return on salary

Three years ago, BTC Direct was the first European company to offer its employees a salary in bitcoin. That salary has since increased in value by more than 700%.

Bitcoin Pizza Day

Eleven years ago, on this day exactly, someone paid 10,000 bitcoin for two pizzas. This was the first time that bitcoin was used as a means of payment. To celebrate this milestone, May 22nd will always be known as Bitcoin Pizza Day. The value of those 10,000 bitcoins has since surpassed hundreds of millions of euros.
