Ethereum Classic’s (price) history

For a long time, Ethereum and Ethereum Classic were one and the same coin. Both went their own way in July 2016, but until then they shared the same blockchain.

The very first block of the joint blockchain dates back from 30 July 2015. For a long time it all went well and everyone was at peace, until the famous DAO hack.

DAO is an abbreviation of "Decentralized Autonomous Organization." A fund was set up on the Ethereum blockchain to demonstrate the power of the platform.

Investors could deposit money on the DAO and get a return on DAO's investments. Everyone was allowed to participate in the investment.

In the end, € 133 million was raised in ether. Ether’s value back then was 18 euros. Unfortunately someone found loopholes in the DAO smart contract.

The Ethereum Foundation decided that the code of the smart contract was no longer valid, and that the money that was sent to the DAO needed to be reversed. This decision led to a heated argument in the Ethereum community and ultimately to a hard fork. Ethereum Classic originated from this hard fork. Ethereum Classic follows the old blockchain and Ethereum is a spin-off from this.

  • Just after the hard fork on June 20, one ETC was roughly worth 1.20 euros.
  • Within two months the price trippeld! The exchange rate on August 2 was 3.22 euros.
  • Unfortunately, that didn’t last very long, the all-time low was reached on 30 November. ETC was then only 60 cents.
  • The following peaks coincide with the movements in the rest of the crypto market. The price shortly reached 21 euros on 12 June 2017 and on 8 January the currency experienced the absolute high around 40 euros.
  • Unfortunately, Ethereum Classic could not escape the overall malaise in the cryptomarket of 2018. The price dropped from 40 euros to 3 euros in December.

What can you expect from the Ethereum Classic price?

Only invest an amount that you can afford to lose

Last but not least, we always recommend investing an amount of money that you can afford to lose. In our opinion, investing in cryptocurrencies is one of the most interesting investments you can de, but at the same time it can be risky due to its volatile behaviour.
