If you keep close tabs on the market and are always on the look-out for new investment oppurtunities chances are you have heard of Polkadot and the corresponding DOT-token. The coin was launched on August 21 2020, it didn't take long for investors to take notice of the coin. Within a week the coin reached the top 10 biggest coins on market capitilisation.

You can calculate the market cap by taking all the coins in circulation and multiplying it with the current price of the coin.

Polkadot is an ambitious project that wants to create the base for a polychain Web3-future. Which sounds complicated but it's comparable to Ethereum's plans: A worldwide shadowinternet on which all apps can be build.

​Polkadots spiritual father is Gavin Woods. No suprise then that Polkadot is similar to Ethereum, Wood was also involved in the creation of Ethereum.
 
He designed Polkadot in an attempt to create a better version of Ethereum, one that is compatible with all existing independent, isolated blockchains like Ethereum and Bitcoin.
 
In total there were 10 million DOT. 5 million of which was auctioned on the ICO in October 2017. Investors received their coins at launch on August 21 2020. A further 2 million DOT was used for pre-launchcontributions. The last 3 million is reserved for the Web3 Foundation.
 
Those 10 million proved insufficient, Polkadot decided to redominate its currency, and add two more zeros. This means there were now 100 x 100 million coins, bringing the total to 1 billion. As a consequence,  the value of 1 single DOT token is a hundred times smaller than it was before the event. For DOT holders, this has had no effect on the value in their portfolio. So say if someone had 1 DOT in their wallet before the event, they had 100 DOT after the redomination.
 
Polkadot was launched on August 31 2020, it traded at €2,41. This increased to €5,51 the next day, a nice yield for early investors. This new price was unsustainable and dropped to €3,19 by October 7, still a very decent price.
 
This decent price would turn out to be a great oppurtunity to get in. Polkadot put the pedal to the metal from January 2021 onwards. The price shot up to a high of €40,63 by May 15. A fourteenfold increase from the DOT price in October 2020!
