BTC Direct's services

BTC Direct only offers crypto-asset services aimed at exchanging crypto-assets for funds and providing crypto-asset transfer services on behalf of clients.

Trading in crypto-assets involves significant risks. Only use money you can afford to lose. Successful transactions or investments in the past are in no way a guarantee of future success. It is your responsibility to do thorough research and, if in doubt, to seek professional advice from an impartial, qualified adviser.

When making transactions, it is essential to enter the correct details, such as wallet addresses. Mistakes in sharing or using these details can lead to the irreversible loss of your crypto-assets. So always check the details carefully before you carry out a transaction.

Risks of trading in digital currencies

BTC Direct informs clients about important risks as honestly and clearly as possible. On specific asset pages, additional risks per crypto-asset are described where applicable. This information is based on general, objective sources, such as (approved) white papers of the crypto-assets concerned.

The most important risks BTC Direct has identified for you are:

Price risk
The value of crypto-assets can fluctuate strongly. Factors such as market forces, regulation, economic events and technological developments can influence the price. These price movements make it difficult to predict the value of your investments, and you can suffer considerable losses.

Custody and management risk
BTC Direct does not offer its clients the option to hold and manage crypto-assets on their behalf. You are responsible yourself for holding and managing your crypto-assets.

Holding crypto-assets involves risks, such as loss or theft of your private keys, hardware wallets or means of access to digital wallets. Without these means of access, you can permanently lose access to your crypto-assets. It is your responsibility to take precautions, such as using strong passwords, offline wallets and backups.

Risk of (stable)coins without a MiCA licence or a registered whitepaper

Some stablecoins that can be traded via BTC Direct have not been issued by a party with a licence under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). This means the issuer is not subject to the requirements MiCA sets for, among other things, reserve management, transparency about the underlying assets and the right to redemption at nominal value.

The absence of a MiCA licence can mean, among other things, that:

  • there is no supervision of the quality and composition of the reserves that should back the value of the stablecoin;
  • redeemability against the underlying currency is not guaranteed;

BTC Direct can always decide to remove such a coin from the platform at some point, for example in response to new laws and regulations or guidelines from supervisory authorities.

In addition, there are coins that have not registered a whitepaper, and this too can create risks in the continuity and availability of the coin concerned.

It is important to always do your own research before buying a particular crypto-asset.

Fraud risk
Crypto-assets are sometimes misused for fraudulent or illegal activities, such as scams, money laundering or hacking. Be careful with offers that seem too good to be true and check the reliability of the parties you do business with.

Transaction risk
When carrying out transactions, sending an insufficient network fee can lead to delays, failed or unconfirmed transactions. This can be a problem especially during periods of high network activity. Make sure you are familiar with the requirements of the specific network you are trading on.

The price at which a transaction is carried out is determined on the basis of several elements. For buy transactions, the price is set at the moment BTC Direct has received the payment. This is not always the moment you completed the payment. For sell transactions, the price is set at the moment BTC Direct has received the crypto-assets. The moment BTC Direct considers the crypto-assets to have been received can differ per type of transaction. We recommend you read the pricing policy we have published, which explains the above in more detail.
