What is Ethereum?
Ethereum is a blockchain platform that has been running since 2015. Developers build applications on it whose rules are laid down in smart contracts, pieces of code that execute themselves as soon as the conditions are met.
The coin of that network is called ether (ETH). Ether is the fuel that runs transactions and applications on the Ethereum network. In everyday use plenty of people say "buying ethereum" when they mean ether.
You never have to buy a whole ether, by the way. You simply buy a small part, from €30 for example. Ether always moves in value, up and down. That is normal, and your investment can become worth less.
