Self-custody means you store your crypto yourself. Not on a platform, but in your own wallet.
You get a private key with it. That key gives access to your coins. Whoever holds the key, holds the coins. With self-custody, you are the only one with that key.
Compare it to cash. Money in the bank sits with the bank. Money in your own safe you manage yourself. Self-custody is your own safe, just digital.
Platform or your own wallet: the difference. If your crypto is on a platform, that platform manages your coins. You trust that they have arranged things well. If your crypto is in your own wallet, you hold the key. No one can access it but you.
In crypto there is a well-known saying: not your keys, not your coins. If you do not hold the key yourself, the coins are strictly speaking not fully yours.
Why this difference matters. As long as everything goes well, you notice little difference. The difference becomes clear when things go wrong. If your crypto is on a platform and that platform runs into trouble, you are at the back of the queue. If your crypto is in your own wallet, nothing changes about your access. Whatever happens to a platform.
That makes self-custody a deliberate choice for many people. Not out of distrust, but because they want to keep control themselves.
And the new European rules? Since 1 July 2026, crypto providers in Europe must hold a MiCAR licence. That is good progress. A licence means a provider meets European requirements and is supervised.
We are MiCAR-registered and have been helping people take their step into crypto since 2013.
Still, a licence is no guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong. And it does not change the principle: crypto on a platform stays under that platform's control. So a licence is a good first check, not an end point.
Getting started with self-custody
Choose a wallet
A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your keys offline. For larger amounts, that is the safest option. For smaller amounts, a mobile wallet can do.
Store your seed phrase safely
Your seed phrase is the backup of your wallet. Write it down and keep it in a safe place. Never share it with anyone.
Send your coins to your own wallet address
With us this happens automatically when you buy. Your coins land directly in your own wallet.
Be honest with yourself: self-custody asks something of you too
Self-custody gives you control, and with it responsibility.
If you lose your seed phrase, no one can restore your coins. There is no forgot password button. So keep your backup carefully.
For many people the control easily outweighs that responsibility. But it is good to know before you start.

A hardware wallet for extra peace of mind
A hardware wallet stores your keys offline, away from the internet. That way you keep control yourself and your crypto stays safe, even if something happens to a platform. In our shop you will find devices from trusted brands.
