Historical bitcoin price per year:
What is Tether?
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin. Its value is pegged to the US dollar, so one USDT is worth roughly one dollar.
That is why the Tether price barely moves. Where bitcoin and ether can swing sharply in a single day, USDT stays almost flat. In euros you will see some movement, because the euro to dollar exchange rate changes every day.
Tether has been around since 2014 and is issued by Tether Limited. The company says it holds a reserve in dollars or similar assets for every USDT in circulation. Think cash and short-term US government bonds. Tether publishes a report on those reserves every quarter.
USDT does not run on a single blockchain, but on several. Ethereum and Tron are the best known. The value is the same everywhere, only the cost and speed of a transaction differ per network. Sending USDT? Always pick the network the receiving party supports.
By market capitalisation, Tether is the largest stablecoin in the world. Traders often use it as a holding place: they sell a coin and park the value in USDT without going back to euros.
Why does the Tether price stay around 1 dollar?
The Tether price follows the US dollar, not supply and demand on the crypto market. That is by design. Here is how the peg works in practice.
Tether Limited issues new USDT as soon as someone deposits dollars, and takes USDT out of circulation on a payout. So the supply moves with demand. As long as there are enough reserves behind it, the price stays around one dollar.
Traders also keep the price tight. If USDT drops to 0.99 dollars, they buy in to capture the difference. If the price rises above one dollar, they sell. That process is called arbitrage and pushes the price back towards the dollar.
Stable does not mean risk-free. The price can drift temporarily. That happened in 2022: market turmoil briefly pushed USDT below the dollar, after which the price recovered within a few days. With a stablecoin you rely on the issuer holding enough reserves.
Looking at the Tether price in euros? Then you are mostly seeing the euro to dollar rate. A strong dollar makes USDT worth slightly more in euros. A weaker dollar pulls the price in euros down with it.
What can you expect from the price?
We cannot predict the future. With a stablecoin, though, the expectation is different from bitcoin or ether. Tether is built to stay around one dollar, so big price jumps are not part of the picture.
What you see in euros comes mainly from the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. If that rate moves, the price of USDT in euros moves with it. That says nothing about Tether itself.
The peg can come under pressure. Doubts about the reserves, a large outflow or market turmoil can briefly push the price below one dollar. In practice the price has recovered each time, but that is not a rule.
Regulation plays a role too. In Europe, MiCA sets stricter requirements for stablecoins and their issuers. Changes there can affect where and how you trade a stablecoin.
